Get race ready with the best epilators for runners (1)

If you prefer to be hair-free (hey, it's a personal choice), an epilator is a surefire way to achieve that silky smooth finish, meaning body hair won't get in the way and snag on your autumn layers layers during runs. So, we've put them to the test in our lab, to help you decide which model to invest in.

With our selection of the best epilators starting from as little as £60, there’s never been a better reason to upgrade from your manual shaver.

    Is epilating better than waxing?

One isn't necessarily better than the other, so it’s completely down to personal preference. They both provide effective hair removal by lifting hairs from the root; they just use slightly different methods.

Epilators feature a row of tiny tweezers that pluck the hairs, whereas waxing involves pulling hairs out rapidly by hand. There’s less risk of allergic reaction, infection and scarring with epilating, so if you suffer from sensitive skin, this could be a better option.

Neither method is totally pain-free, though. Epilators do tend to reach more of the teeny-tiny hairs, which some may argue makes it more painful, whereas waxing tackles only what’s on the top layer of the skin.

    Do epilators stop hair regrowth?

While epilators do provide long-term results, they won’t magically make your hair disappear forever. An epilator can keep you hair-free for up to four weeks, so if you prefer the smooth look, you can chuck on your running shorts without a second thought.

When hair does grow back, it will be lighter and finer, so it won’t be as noticeable if you skip a week of epilating.

    How we test

Our panel of testers tried a range of epilators, assessing how easy each one was to use, how effectively they removed hair, and how much regrowth they spotted over a period of four to eight weeks of use.

How do I get the best results from an epilator? ›

Taking a warm water bath or shower will help soften your hair while opening up the skin pores. Thus, epilating after the shower makes hair removal easier thereby reducing the epilator pain. Moreover, your skin needs to be clean before epilating, so this step helps you achieve it.

Is it better to epilate fast or slow? ›

    Slow equals sexy.

Take about 15 seconds from ankle to knee. Going too fast risks breaking the hair which may lead to ingrown hairs.

Which brand epilator is the best? ›

Our favorite epilator is the Remington Smooth & Silky Deluxe Rechargeable Epilator. It's affordable, easy to use, delivers long-lasting results, and helps thin the hair in between sessions.

Is it better to epilate wet or dry? ›

Epilating wet is going to be a less painful than dry, as there's water to coat and comfort the skin, according to dermatologist Dr. Michele Green, MD. However, "dry epilation is more efficient because the hairs are not flatted down by water," she says, so the epilator can catch and pull each hair better.

Is it better to epilate before or after shower? ›

Have a bath - Epilating wet skin generally works better and is more painless than epilating dry skin. The skin is also more relaxed and desensitised when it has been bathed in warm water first.

    Epilation Aftercare: Mistakes to Avoid.
    1. Not Treating Your Skin Immediately with Nourishing and Moisturizing Epilation Aftercare.

Should I moisturize before epilating? ›

Epilators work best on clean skin free of natural oils, moisturisers and lotions. A good soak will cleanse the area, open the pores and soften the hair making it ready for the session.

Should you moisturize after epilating? ›

    Soothe your skin with moisturizer.

Exfoliation and epilation can dry out your skin. After rinsing off your skin, apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer. This can soothe newly epilated skin and keep dry skin from clogging your pores and hair follicles.

What to put on skin after epilating? ›

If, however, there are spots and irritations after epilation, use for 2-3 days shower oils and gentle regenerating lotions, created for sensitive skin or for babies. Spray thermal water several times a day, which has a calming role. You can use an antiseptic cream to speed up the healing of the skin.

Can two people use the same epilator? ›

As the tweezers present in the epilator touches the skin and removes hair from its roots, it can grip on any dirt, germs or product present on your skin. If you share the same epilator with your friend or sister, the same dirt or germs can cause skin irritation to the other person.

Can leg hair be too long to epilate? ›

Let your leg hair grow to at least 0.5mm before epilating. However, don't let it grow too long, as shorter hair is less painful to remove. Exfoliation is key before all hair removal methods, and epilation is no exception. Exfoliate your legs gently before epilating to remove all dead skin, dirt and oil.

    Are expensive epilators better? ›

With any technology products, the more expensive it is the more features and advanced technology it has. Some of the more expensive ones have wider heads and better tweezers for a smoother finish. They also come with extra add-ons like a skin buffer or face epilator too.

    Do dermatologists recommend epilators? ›

"Epilators can be a good option for someone who is not a candidate for laser hair removal or gets irritation with depilatory creams and shaving," explains Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at New York's MDCS Dermatology.

Can you epilate pubic hair? ›

You can also use an epilator to remove coarser hair such as heavy facial hair and bikini or pubic hair. These epilators have more tweezer heads and stronger motors to help manage thicker hair. If you use an epilator for pubic hair, test out a small area first to be sure it doesn't irritate your skin or cause a rash.

What is the difference between a laser epilator and an epilator? ›

An epilator rips the hair out of the root, similar to waxing, and has to be done time and time again. Laser Hair Removal feels similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin, and once you have completed all your treatments, you shouldn't ever have to wax, shave, pluck, epilate or laser again.

Is it worth it to buy an epilator? ›

In general, epilators remove more hair than electric shavers do. Although they can take more time and effort to use than shavers, they can save you time and energy in the long run. Because an epilator removes hairs at the root, you won't have to use it again for several weeks.
