Question: Does "canned oysters" mean the actual canned ones (which are cooked), or the containers of fresh shucked oysters (which are not cooked)?

Karen

I added some lemon juice and zest (maybe a T. each). I also added a t. of Old Bay Seasoning; being from Maryland, crab just doesn't taste right without it. Also used claw meat, not lump crab, just to economize. With all these little tweaks, the dip turned out great, and I'll make it again.

I made this for a work party - it was easy to make ahead and put in the refrigerator and pop in the oven when guest arrive. It is very rich and the oysters give it a nice extra flavor - I served on top of crackers with a small slice of avocado on top - it was great

Christopher

Really delicious recipe! We used a 3 oz. tin of smoked oysters from Trader Joe's. Next time I will use a bit more salt and hot sauce.

Made this for Christmas Eve as part of the "7 fishes". It cost me about $75 using all fresh ingredients. NOT WORTH IT. It was bland and mediocre at best. Would never make again.

The dip is baked so I'd use the fresh shucked oysters to ensure the briny flavor. I'm thinking the canned oysters wouldn't have the bright flavor I'd like.

Delicious and rich, will be a new menu item for holiday celebrations. Didn’t include oysters or jalapeño — perfectly tasty without. Basically tasted like deconstructed crab cakes to us. Recipe was too much for small party (6 people) but would be perfect for a potluck or larger gathering. Best with robust pita chips and thicker bread. Sprinkled old bay seasoning on top and some scallions for color. It was a hit.

Great recipe. Easy to assemble, easy to prepare and well liked by all.

Holly

I really wanted to like this, especially after spending $25 on crab. However I found it lackluster at best. Will not make it again.

Lilly

I made this and added Old bay and it came out perfect! Will definitely make this again! Thanks!

Marissa

Added a bit of anchovy paste and Sherry, topped with some old bay. Absolutely fantastic. But even better the next day in an omelette.

Paul

The avocado was a nice touch - thanks

This is fabulous! It is now one of our go-to appetizers. It's so easy and can be tailored to your own taste. A keeper.

Perfect.

I have been making NY Times recipes for a 'try something new dinner party' for a year. This was the #1 appetizer. My only addition was to use a few tablespoons of dijon mustard.

Our guests went gaga over this, but I believe this amount of oyster overwhelms the crab. We also found it best over crackers, not bread.

Jennifer

I still want to know if this is with cooked/canned oysters or raw.

Omitted the oysters. Used pepper Jack cheese and omitted the jalapeño. Reduced Mayo to 1/2 cup. Added 1/2 c sour cream. Added 1.5 t Old Bay. Added 1/2 lemon, juiced. Added 4 oz cream cheese. Sprinkled top with chive and sliced green onion. Raved reviews from family and friends.

Bret

I like to substitute raw, freshly shucked oysters with the liquor for canned ones.

KristinShu

This was delicious and super easy to make! I did this without oysters and it turned out great. I will be making this again!

Amanda

So good! We ended up making a half recipe since it was just for my husband and I, but otherwise followed the recipe sans jalapeño. We used jumbo lump crab, but could easily use backfin or claw meat to make it for a crowd.

Dan

This made my house smell so bad and no one ate it .

Zesty and flexible recipe for our COVID lockdown here in Germany. Enjoyed by all, no leftovers:)

Idclove

Does it really need the cheese?

Grace

Mine turned out really fishy and stinky. Not great.

Added 1.5tsp Old Bay, used cayenne and a couple shakes of hot sauce for heat because didn’t have a jalapeño. It was amazing! Creamy, decadent and flavorful with a touch of heat on the finish. Already made it twice and have a 3rd request. Yum!

Reduced mayo by 1/3 (to 1/2 c.), replaced crab with diced shrimp, heavy shake of Frank's no jalapeno, and added a squeeze from half lime for acid...flavor was delicious, but wound up a bit runny (I think due to extra moisture from the shrimp). Would let drape in paper towels to extract some moisture next time, but tasty for sure.
