Here's what's happening this week in the Chattanooga area.
Sentimental journey
Glenn Miller's biggest hit, "Chattanooga Choo Choo," and other classic songs live on in a new release from Hindsight Records. The 14 tracks of "The Glenn Miller Orchestra: 80th Anniversary of the Army Air Force Band" have been newly recorded with strings and a guest appearance by country star Crystal Gayle on "Sentimental Journey." During World War II, as his musical career soared, Miller wanted to fulfill his patriotic duties and boost troop morale by entertaining U.S. soldiers. He and the Army Air Force Band, a flexible group of 45 or more musicians, began performing in March 1943. During the fall of 1944, the band was set to embark on a six-week tour of Europe. Miller departed early to arrange for the group's arrival. On Dec. 15, his transport plane, bound for Paris, vanished over the English Channel and Miller was never seen again. The album of fully remastered songs is available for streaming or on CD or vinyl. The Glenn Miller Orchestra, which still tours, will be in Chattanooga on Nov. 1.
